Turlock’s Own Johnny Big Ears Advances in National Runway Competition

Turlock native John Paul Padilla has made it to the quarterfinals of the 2026 Next Runway Star competition, an online model search benefiting Rise Now US, a nonprofit dedicated to supporting survivors of sexual assault.

Padilla is best known locally as the creator of Johnny Big Ears, a children’s book series written to help kids stand up to bullying. The character grew out of Padilla’s own childhood, when he was teased for his appearance. His book, Johnny Big Ears, the Feel Good Friend, is available in both English and Spanish and carries a message of self-esteem, empathy, and resilience.

Those experiences taught me that true confidence doesn’t come from being perfect. It comes from embracing who you are,” Padilla said.

The Next Runway Star competition awards its winner $20,000, professional styling, and a spot walking in the Rise Fashion Show during New York Fashion Week, with all proceeds supporting Rise Now US. Padilla has advanced through every round so far, with each stage decided by public voting. Community members can cast a free vote once a day to help him move forward.
